Jyotiṣa: Vedic Astrology

The word Jyotiṣa literally means the “Lords of Light,” and reflects the fascination with the night sky found in all cultures. Positing that we are all of the same creation, leads to the exciting conclusion that one part of that creation can tell us something about another part—ourselves. This thousand-years old Indian tradition uses sky patterns at the moment of our birth to make more knowable one of life’s greatest mysteries: What is my place in this world? Using these ancient techniques in a modern context can help us understand facets of our destiny pattern as they have unfolded and have yet to unfold, as we steer the ship of our life.

Hasta Sāmudrika: Indian Palmistry

We all know that our fingerprints are unique, and recent science shows that our hands connect to more brain receptors per surface area than nearly any other part of our body.  The ancient Indian sages taught that decoding our destiny patterns requires reading the signs of nature all around us–including our own two hands! Like all things in nature, the markings on our hands can change in a short time period, indicating the shifts in our present-day habits. When coupled with a birth chart reading, interpreting the signs and symbols on our hands yields fascinating insight into our current trajectory, based on the decisions we make in this moment.

Get to know me

Hi, I’m Laura Lewellyn.

Welcome!  The ancient sciences of Jyotiṣa (Vedic Astrology) and Hasta Sāmudrika (Indian Palmistry) have helped me understand myself and open my world in ways I didn’t think possible. I want to share the light-power of these modalities with you!

I offer readings and coaching, teach basic and intermediate Jyotiṣa (Vedic Astrology) and Hasta Sāmudrika (Palmistry) in private tutoring and small groups, and lead workshops as part of yoga teacher trainings and wellness retreats.

My approach to Jyotiṣa and Hasta Sāmudrika is informed by an accidental fifteen year career in the corporate world, in which I’ve held titles including “Innovation,” “Product,” and “Researcher” for technology companies helping to build teams and launch new products. Despite the variety of jobs I’ve had, I’ve always played the same function:  helping organizations and their people find their place, and design strategies to achieve their goals. My favorite part of any job has been mentoring those around me.

I’ve studied Jyotiṣa for ten years, and am deeply grateful to have spent the last five under the guidance and mentorship of Penny Farrow and Claudia Anfuso, in the lineage of Hart deFouw and KL Mantri. I have a decade of lineage-based yoga practice, including a 200-hour yoga teacher certification with Sri Dharma Mittra and many additional hours with Sri Andrei Ram Om. I continue my studies with Sanskrit and Advaita Vedānta.

Early experiences as an exchange student, extensive global travel, and practices of diverse cultural and spiritual ritual inform my worldview. I hold a BA in East Asian Religions and Languages from Wittenberg University, an MA in Religion and Psychology from the University of Chicago Divinity School, and have additional PhD studies in Religion. My research areas included mythology and meaning-making, positive psychology, values development, and religion and behavior. I trained as an ethnographer at the National Opinion Research Center, and am an eternal questioner and a natural teacher.

Consultations with me are compassionate and practical, as I work with you to gently unfold your desires within the context of who you are and where you find yourself in your destiny pattern right now. Clients and students describe me as knowledgeable, approachable, kind.
